Spader handles a tricky role beautifully, but this is Gyllenhaals's tour de force. She is remarkable and original.

The Times

Zodiac Film Club presents Secretary (2002), the story of a demanding boss and the woman who loves his demands. A dark erotic indie romance starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader, this is the movie responsible for a generation of sexual awakenings. Recently released from a mental hospital, painfully shy Lee Holloway gets a job as secretary to eccentric attorney, E. Edward Grey. Yeah it’s a spanking movie, but if you need to hear something more highbrow it’s also a smart, beautiful film about self acceptance with wonderful performances and the most evocative set design ever. We order you to come see it with us on Wednesday 26th June at 7pm.

Beginning with a shared love of horror, pulp, thrills and mystery, Sarah Kathryn Cleaver and Jordan Storm Louise set up the Zodiac Film Club. You can expect carefully chosen screenings every month, a film for each sign. We select good looking films, complex female characters and our favourites in forgotten classics, cult and contemporary cinema to share with you, and invite you to talk about it with us afterwards.
