Set in the Deep South between the wars, The Colour Purple follows the life of Celie, a young black woman growing up in the early 1900’s. When her husband separates Celie from her sister, she is plunged into a lonely, unforgiving world. However, Celie's life changes with the appearance of sultry singer Shug Avery, who gives her the determination to become a strong woman.
Starring Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover this film explores the problems African American women faced during the the early 20th century.
