Jellied Reels: Chronicle of a Disappearance

120 mins
1996
BBFC 12A

Winner of the Lion of the Future Award for best first film at the Venice Film Festival, Chronicle of a Disappearance is a jumble of absurd vignettes, documentary-style excerpts and left-field observations of Palestine at the end of the previous millennium.

Reflecting on the human tendency towards conflict and revealing a comic poetry to daily life under occupation, director Elia Suleiman also stars himself - his character returning home after a period of exile and readjusting to life in Nazareth and then Jerusalem. Sublimely structured in a style that draws from the silent comedies of Buster Keaton and the choreography of Jacques Tati, Chronicle of a Disappearance is as engaging as it is unusual.

Presented with a surprise short film.
