Private detective Philip Marlowe is hired by wealthy General Sternwood to stop a blackmailer targeting his younger daughter. As he follows the trail through Los Angeles, the case grows into a maze of disappearances, murder and deception—and brings him into the orbit of Sternwood’s sharp-witted elder daughter, Vivian.
