Santiago de Chile, 1978. As Pinochet's oppressive dictatorship stamps down on civil liberties, Raul Peralta escapes the tedium of everyday life by obsessing over Tony Manero - the Brooklyn disco king played by John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.
When the national television station announces a Tony Manero impersonation contest, Raul inches closer to the limelight he craves, but at the same time unleashes an unbridled inner passion for his dancing idol.
Directed by Pablo Larrain (Maria, Spencer, Jackie), with an unflinching performance by Alfredo Castro, Tony Manero is a darkly compulsive character study of an individual's pathologies in the face of a violent and morally decrepit society.
“Marvelously unhinged study of pop culture obsession.” – The Village Voice
"Both oddly fascinating and repellent." – The Guardian
